Since it's warmed up, I wanted to remind everyone to make sure your dog is on some kind of flea/tick preventative! We have Frontline for cats and all sizes of dogs in stock in the store, and Dr. Cohen at Center City Vet Hospital (down the street at 37 S. 3rd) has other brands of flea/tick preventative available to his patients.
Even when your dog's on preventative meds, you might still find bugs on them when you take them into particularly buggy environments. I love taking Ramona to the Wissahickon, or to the beach, or hiking in the Pine Barrens when it's nice out, but I DON'T like finding ticks on her afterwards. Here's some additional protection...
- Neem spray. I love this stuff! I keep a bottle of it on me all spring/summer long and I won't let my dogs go into the park, woods, or to the beach without a good spray-down. I even use it on myself to keep the bugs off! It smells nice and really works at providing an extra barrier against ticks.
- Pet Naturals Flea & Tick Wipes. These are new, but I really like them. They are a blend of natural oils that fend off the buggies. Great for puppies, cats, or dogs that are sensitive to sprays. Easy and portable - nothing that can spill!
- Natural Flea and Tick Shampoo and Neem Shampoo. After getting home from an outdoors excursion, a good bath doesn't hurt. These shampoos help get off any stubborn bugs but are safe to be used in conjunction with Frontline or other spot-on preventative treatments because they're all natural.
- Flea Combs. Simple and effective. You can't get 'em off without one of these guys.
Here's to an active and flea-free spring and summer!
